Getting out the message

Have you gotten somebody involved in geocaching?

Getting out the message

Postby OldWyo on Tue May 20, 2008 8:52 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know about the classes that the City of Green River and myself are doing to encourage people to get involved with geocaching. Tonight, we held a class with 25 people to introduce them to the use of GPS's and hunting caches. Green River has bought 20 Garmin Etrek's and provided a meeting place and materials for caches to find during the class. I provide my knowledge and experience with geocaching to help teach the use of GPS's and urge them to get involved with geocaching.com, wyogeo.net and WAG by providing brochures, pamphlets and other written materials .

The class went extremely well and all but two that attended expressed their desire to continue with the sport. Whether that turns out to be true remains to be seen but at least a seed has been planted. We plan on holding classes again in June and perhaps in July.

Here's hoping that we, as experienced geocachers, can do what we can to get more people involved with our sport.

Good for you Ellis, I'm sure this kind of effort will result in more cachers and hopefully more people using the website and being interested in being involved in WAG. I have been trying to recruit people to come to the Brownbag in June in hopes they will meet people they like and encourage them to attend other events and become more involved. I enjoy this hobby and probably always will and I also enjoy sharing my hobby with friends and relatives but have not been successful in actually recruiting anybody into the hobby. Maybe some day!

Mike is going to "teach" geocaching to 4-H kids at Malo Camp, Northeast of Newcastle, on or around June 17, 18, 19. Grace and I were going to go with him but now I am having friends from Kansas come to visit so he will be on his own. I get to entertain my two best childhood girlfriends while he is gone, which he is actually quite happy about . Men!

I talk to a lot of people about geoacching in general or just in passing. I try to let them know what it is and I always mention goups I am in (which currently is 3). I also like to let people know about events and invite them even if they come w/out and RSVP I figure it is a way to teach them what and how fun geocaching is and maybe get them interested with the help of other geocachers.

This is probably going to come accross as selfish but I am very peticular about who I "let in" on Geocaching. I have always liked that it is a bit of a secret club and that "common" folk don't know about it. Am I being really shortsighted here? I feel like if everyone knows about it it will loose somthing. I want the sport to thrive but I don't want everyone doing it. How fun would it be to try to bag a nano in downtown Denver with all these people around if when you went for it, someone saw you and was like, "Oh, he's just Geocaching." How about BLM or USFS having regulations on caches and limiting or eliminating them because of too many being placed and then caching being associated with trash in the woods? What does everyone else think?

Thought you might enjoy the following log I received from my "County Fifteen" cache, it made my day :D .

Went on a relaxing trip with my boyfriend and my parents (casperlookers) and decided to go along with them while they were geocaching. My boyfriend and I liked it so much that well... Here we are! We found quite a bit on our first time! ! ! Had a blast! ! ! All I could hear for the next few days was "can't wait till we get back home so I can go buy us a GPS!" And not even within the first 20 minutes of being in town, we bought us our own GPS! We are hooked! TNLNSL TFTC! ! !

That's cool. I noticed that in Lander, WY we have all kinds of interesting summer parks and rec classes but GPS use was not one of them. I think some of you have taught classes on GPS and Geocaching. Anyone feel like sharing some info that I can pass onto parks and rec. They seem interested.
