Personal stats

Postby Rubiconlwb on Fri May 15, 2009 1:43 pm

I have been intrigued by the stats generated by such programs/sites as itsnotaboutthenumbers.com, mycachingprofile.com and Cache Stats and have used each of them. I came across a page of stats generated by GSAK a week or two ago and was very interested in that. Today I did some investigating and discovered that the way to do that is actually through a macro. You locate the macro FindStatGen3 using GSAK and the Macro menu, install it in GSAK then when you do a personal stats query, simply upload the .gpx file that results from unzipping the query and run the macro. It creates the stats which you can then place in your profile. I didn't see much documentation on this but did discover that it saves the html code on your computer so I went to the file, captured the html code and pasted into my profile page and it worked fine. I suspect you can place this same code on your clipboard but have yet to discover how to do that. Once it is in your clipboard, you go to your profile, place the cursor where you want the stats and press Ctrl-V to paste the code where your cursor sits. It is a very comprehensive set of stats, perhaps more than anybody every wants but is another avenue for you to get your stats presented in an organized fashion. Let me know your thoughts on this process

Lee, I think that this looks interesting however never having done anything with macros I downloaded the macro and ran it but where do you find the results so that you can paste it into your profile?

That was the difficult part, Wayne! I was hoping somebody who has successfully used this macro would respond and perhaps they still will as to an easy method of capturing the code. What I did was go to the html that was created by the macro which, for me, was as below:

c:\program files\gsak\html\stats1.html (the file name itself may be different for you)

Once I located this file, I right-clicked it and selected 'Edit'. This will run Notepad or whatever program your computer is set up to use as a text editor. From here, you can highlight all the code and press Ctrl-C to copy the code to your clipboard. Then go to your profile and place the cursor where you want to insert the stats and press Ctrl-V to paste the code in place. That should do it but hopefully there is an easier and more elegant method. If i discover anything, I will post it. I have never experimented with macros and GSAK before but it looks like there may be some great things you can do.

Another thing that I discovered is, the first time I ran the micro it listed as the stats for 'username' which was a little disappointing. What you need to do is change the username when you run the macro the first time at the options screen or when you run the macro on subsequent times, click the 'Options' button when given the opportunity and you can change the username there. I hope this helps.

I just did my updated stats to perform an experiment. We found 13 caches yesterday and so I wanted to get the updated stats online. I did the PQ, unzipped and ran the .gpx file which auto-ran GSAK. I then went to do the macro FindStatGen but it kept telling me that it was not found when I just did this process a couple nights ago. So I had to go back and download the macro and install it again. I don't know if I did something wrong the first time or if this was just a glitch but at any rate, I was able to run the macro on the new stats. I suspected that perhaps the code was automatically sent to the clipboard but was not sure so I went to my profile, deleted the old stat data and, in the location where the old code had been, I pressed Ctril-V to paste whatever was on the clipboard at that spot. Lo and behold, there was the code for my new stats. So, as long as you do not dump the contents of your clipboard, you can go to your profile and paste your stats after you have run the macro. If this process is one you wish to attempt, good luck and let us know what your results are. I read a while back that OldWyo has created his own macro, perhaps he will give us a lesson at the BB (hopefully we will have a wireless connection available there).

Hi all,

Here's a link to some of the features you are looking at with the FindStatGen3 macro in GSAK -- http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=4623&st=40&#entry75070 -- (it will be the post dated - March 30, 2009 01:13 pm) it looks like it can be quite a powerful tool.

I took a look at the coding for it (whoever wrote it is one hell of a programer) and it is set to automatically dump the html onto your clipboard (no other options) - quote from the macro "Once the macro has finished running the clipboard is loaded with the code ready for pasting into your GC.com Profile."

Hope this helps.

I have been doing a lot more investigation into this macro and there are lots of options and lots of things you can add even to the macro as it is. One thing I was experimenting with is the map of the counties of Wyoming. I was successful in getting the map placed on my stats but none of the counties are shaded in. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong but hopefully I'll be able to figure it out. You can also insert things like your personal stats box and a rankings box using the options. Very interesting macro and I really do like the results. I hope anybody experimenting with this is having good luck.
