Adoption Idea

Postby Team SCR on Wed Dec 23, 2009 9:14 am

Hey all,

I have been brainstorming ideas on how to promote WAG and make it better known in the state and I have come up with an idea and wanted some input on it. Geocaching is all about not destroying nature and keeping the earth green and clean so I have come up with an idea to help with that and help get the WAG name out also.

Here in Laramie they are letting people or groups adopt sections of the greenway to pick up trash on I was wondering if this is something that WAG may want to look into. We could do it in more that Laramie as people in all areas of the state could look into something like this in their area.

We are always holding events and all that they ask for adoption of the greenway is to have a clean up twice a year, that is easily done with events or just the local cachers going out and taking care of it.

I think it is a great idea as it will be keeping the earth clean which we Geocachers are for and it would also help promote WAG at the same time.

Any input suggestions or other info would be greatly appreciated and I would be more than willing to spearhead this in our area and get the ball rolling.

Thanks,

Matt

We would love to get involved. We would love to see more CITO events and if adopting a greenway or section of Highway helps the Earth, State, Town then count us in.

So is this something I should look into or not? With the lack of replies I am thinking not for WAG but I may use SEWGO as I think it is a great idea. Any input is greatly appreciated.

It appears that I never commented on this thread (how the heck did that happen, you ask yourself!). I think it is a great idea and I will let you kow that we will come help any time we are free to do so and you set up a CITO but as you know, nobody can guarantee what will happen in the future. Certainly, if you adopt a section of greenway, set up a CITO any nobody shows up, it will be much more work for the few that do make it but almost always there are at least a few people who make events to get the smilie. Is there a minimal number of times that you have to go out and clean up your section? I don't think a CITO event every few months would be too much to consider. The event wouldn't have to be anything more than a cleanup and then a meet and greet afterward. That would be simple and would require a minimum of preparation. I'd say if you want to get involved in such a thing, go for it and we all will support it if we possibly can. Perhaps adopting a section that has a park or at least tables would be advisable so we can have the meet and greet there would be best if possible.

I will look into this sometime next week and then will post an update. I will brainstorm more ideas and as I come up with them I will post them here. I know we are always looking to promote WAG so that that is what i will brainstorm and try to do.

I did look into this and they parks department says it is a two year agreement and $75.00 per year. They say the $75.00 is for the signs with our logos on them. We would have to pick up trash on the greenway at least twice a year. There is one other person I would need to talk with about this but I thought I would post what i found out here first as the other person will not be back until Jan. 11th.

I have to admit I have trouble with the $75.00 a year, that is basically paying them to pick up trash.

If WAG wants to do this let me know and I will follow up further if not I will keep brainstorming new ideas.

We agree that the $75.00 "fee" for the signs/contract seems a little excessive. Plus, that would only cover the section of adopted greenway in Laramie, right? The cost alone makes it very unattractive to adopt multiple sections of highway in the WAG name. If WAG does decide to adopt a section, would it be better to have it in a more centralized location, thus making it easier for more members to participate? AND...Will "Wyoming Association of GeoCachers" even fit on a sign???

I tend to agree with Lee's idea of holding CITO events. Maybe we (WAG) could sponsor multiple CITO events around the state this year and see how the turnout is. I think if we hold actual events, you'll have a better showing.

If we are going to make this a WAG project, I imagine this is a topic that we could also discuss at the annual meeting. That way, we would have more input from members, since a lot of them do not always participate in the forums...

Anyways, just our two cents. We'll wait and see what other information turns up and how things play out.

I am flabbergasted that the City Of Laramie would charge a group to participate in a cleanup like this! I definitely say we do not want to participate, our funds are very limited and can be spent in other areas more productively. We can have a CITO some place, clean up an area and accomplish the same effect for zero dollars. It was a great idea Matt but my opinion is that we do not pursue that avenue of helping a community. It is no wonder that some of these programs are not heavily supported if a group is willing to work to clean an area up yet the city wants to charge them for the priviledge. Great idea if you talk people into doing that. It is comparable in my mind to going over to clean an elderly neighbors house and they charge you to do so! Amazing!
