Peggy and I went to the overnight event at Curt Gowdy State Park and had a great time. We had been to Sturgis right before and had intended to leave home about noon on Friday but we were dragging to the point that we didn't get out of town until about 2:30, arriving at the event site about 4:30. Initially, we drove up to the checkin station and explained that we were with the geocaching group and that our camping had been prepaid. The young woman in the booth told us that it was in Russel Campground, just ahead and that we could go right in. We found Russell and drove into the campground but nobody was there which we thought was weird but we parked next to the pavilion and soon we heard Matt yelling at us from across a small ravine. He was camped at Happy Jack campground next door so we drove over there. When we got there and were greeted by Matt, he asked where our permit was. She had not given us one (this girl was either not on the ball or poorly trained) so Matt went and got our permit so we could get back into the campground when we left. The wind was blowing quite hard as we were pitching our tent which made things interesting but we finally got it accomplished. By that time, Matt had left to meet other cachers at Country Buffet in Cheyenne where we were having dinner so we took off as well. We met and had dinner and then headed back to camp where we sat around the campfire and visited for a while before going to bed. The next morning, we were given a sheet with the coordinates of all 20 of the new caches placed for the event so we headed out to do some caching. We hadn't been caching long before we realized we were very low on gas so we headed to Laramie. After filling up, we decided to get a burger for lunch, look for the power trail caches and head back up on the mountain. It took a while to figure out where to park to look for the new caches but we finally found the closest spot and headed out. The closest one was 1/4 mile away and then they were about .1 to .17 miles apart from there in a loop along the walking path. I figured we walked about 1-1/2 miles in the circuit and to our surprise, we were FTF on all 7 caches. We headed back to camp to participate in the event activities but shortly after arriving, the skies opened up and it rained quite hard for an hour or so. Peggy and I layed down in our tent and took a nap while it rained. People filtered in for the next hour or so and then we all ate and they determined the poker run winner and gave away the raffle prizes. Later on that evening, we all sat around the campfire again, this time many in the group roasted marshmallows and made s'mores which was a huge hit! We all went to bed about midnight, waking up about 7:00 the next morning. We had to be out of the Park by 10:00 or would be charged a day fee of $4 so we all got packed up and headed out. We did a little caching on the mountain as well as in Laramie and then headed home. We got home about 3:00 and due to the hectic schedule of the previous week, took naps and felt much better by evening. It was a super event, we met some new cachers and had a nice time with our geocaching friends. I was a little disappointed in the attendance but have been for most events we have attended lately. I don't really know what is happening but we will continue to attend events and will encourage others to do so as well. Our thanks go out to Matt and Jenn of Team SCR for sponsoring this event and for all their hard work. We also thank Kim and Capri of corkibean for their donations and all they did to make this a successful event. We love camping and this was a super event. Thanks again and count us in for the next one!
