Spring in the air

Postby Rubiconlwb on Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:05 am

This past weekend definitely felt like spring here in Rawlins, I hope it was the same wherever you are. On Saturday, the ice and snow on the street to the east of our house was melting but was not actually flowing to the storm sewer so my grand-daughter Kayla and I got busy chipping away. We started at the neighbors house since it was open at that point and moved slowly through our drive. WE also opened up an area at the lane in the driveway where Peggy uses to go into the garage since it would have been a huge hump to go over otherwise. After about 2 hours of work, we had enough chipped away that the water was flowing pretty nicely. We went for a mile walk at that point since it was so pleasant. By the time we got back, all the water had drained so it exposed the ice even further. It was very pleasant and one could feel the presence of spring and I even eyed the ice and snow in the driveway blocking my motorcycle but didn't have the ambition to tackle that job. The next morning after Peggy left for church, I was outside showing my old Ford pickup to a neighbor who is interested in buying it so got busy chipping away at the ice in the driveway. Before long, I had enough removed that I could get the motorcycle out. I unplugged the battery tender and slowly backed the bike out of the garage and into the driveway. I started the bike up and away I went with no gear on whatsoever (no jacket, no gloves, no helmet). I thought that I'd go around the block but by the time I was back, I had ridden about a mile and my hands were going numb from the cold. I needed gas so stopped at the house, put on my jacket, gloves and helmet and was off to get gas. After I got gas, I decided to ride through town and do the Wagon Circle loop. When I got back home, I had ridden 9 miles and was ready for more. Since Peggy had just gotten home from church, I asked if she wanted to ride the bike to Sinclair and have lunch at Su Casa and she agreed! On the way there, she told me that she didn't think she was ready to ride to Saratoga or Laramie just yet and although I gave her a bad time, I really wasn't either as the cold was creeping into my body as well. It was so good to be back on the bike, I wore a smile for the rest of the day. I am confident that from now on, the bike will sit in the garage for periods of time but there will be those days where I will be able to get out on the bike and blow away the spring fever I will be experiencing again. We will get snow but it will melt off before it has a chance to turn into ice and block the driveway again. I am very much looking forward to 60+ degree weather so we can ride and not freeze but a short ride here and there will keep me going. I've been thinking about a geocaching trip to Thermop/Worland one of these weekends when pleasant weather is predicted. There are lots of caches there for us to hunt and it should be a good time. I might drop the bike off in Lander to be serviced at the same time thus making the trip even more productive. Does anybody else have spring fever like I do?

Not spring fever, spring activism since we are leaving in about two hours for a long, long weekend in St. George, UT. We won't be back until Sunday or Monday. We're going to ride our ATVs, geocache and enjoy some 60+ degree weather there instead of waiting for it to come to us. Our toy hauler sure makes it nice. Just hook up and go. Like I said before, Trailcachers have set a good example and we are going to practice our butts off at retiring until the real thing gets here  .

Ellis,
We will be in Hurricane (near St. George) Friday for a few days. We will be at Willowwind campground. I have to visit with a cousin on Saturday but if you have time to get together let me know.

What are the chances  ???? We are staying in Willow Wind also, from Wednesday thru Saturday, space #111. We'll be out on our ATVs during the days but look forward to hooking up with you.

Just for Lee's benefit - we discovered that there is nothing funner than driving delinerator post to delinerator post during a white-out while pulling 12000 pounds of fifthwheel behind you. I THOUGHT WE LEFT WINTER IN WYOMING  .

Seems to me that driving through the snowstorm was your punishment for the fun 5 days you will be experiencing down in Utah. It is true that the weather can be very treacherous this time of year in many parts of the country but the good part is that it doesn't usually last too long. I was looking at the forecast for here this morning and we are supposed to get snow today and tonight but by Friday supposed to be in the lower 50's and by Tuesday of next week, as high as 59 (I'll believe that when I see it and it does me no good as I will be working anyway). Be safe and have tons of fun! Maybe for a split second think of us poor saps stuck here dealing with springtime in Wyoming. I'm thinking that a road trip to Thermopolis and Worland might be in the works in the next couple weeks. I need to get service done on my motorcycle so we may do that in Lander Saturday morning then move on the Thermop, do some caching, spend the night and cache the next day before heading home. Thermop can be very pleasant this time of year if one is lucky enough to pick the right weekend. A few quick questions Ellis... #1 Are you planning on going to the Buford event? #2 Did you get the patches? #3 When are you going to get a Facebook accounty so we can keep better track of you? There are quite a few of your friends on Facebook now who try to keep in contact a little and you would be a great addition to our lists. :?: :?: :?:

Hey Lee,

It got better today. We left Fillmore after sweeping four inches of snow off of our slide outs and continued south. Two hours down the road at Cedar City, we were stuck on the freeway for four hours because of a 15 vehicle pile up. Finally made it to the St. George area around 8:00 pm and are just now getting everything set up for the evening.

If it wasn't for all this fun we are having we would almost wish we were back in WYOMING  .

Wayne, we got moved from space 111 to space 122 but hey, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Ellis,
We were not able to get into Willow Wind as it seems that there are too many ATV'ers there for this weekend so we are in St. George however we would like to run over tonight and catch up with you as there is a night cache in Hurricane that we would like to do. So give me a call 307-680-2853 and let me know what time you will be back in from having fun.
We should be in St. George early afternoon.
