A couple of our favorite Black Hills caches

Postby team5150 on Tue May 04, 2010 10:54 am

Since no one has commented in here in over a year, I thought that I would add a couple of our favorite caches over in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The first one is "Not all that glitters is gold - GC12HX3". This is a four part multi that takes you on a relatively easy four mile hike through the Norbeck Preserve. The final stage is next to a huge old mine.
Next would be "Gold Mountain Cache - GC5C69". This is an easy to get to cache, during the summer the forest service roads will take you to within a few hundred feet of the cache. However during the winter the road is closed so it is about a half mile walk to the cache location. The cache is next to an historic gold mine with some of the old equipment still in place.

I am hoping we can do a little caching on the motorcycle this year while we are in Sturgis for the rally. We ride every day and are traveling past hundreds of caches and all we need to do is take the time to stop and grab a few. We also need a couple DeLorme grids in Wyoming near the Black Hills but not sure we will be able to grab those as I'm sure a couple are on dirt or gravel roads which I avoid on the motorcycle. We are hoping to take a trip to the area in the early fall in the pickup so we can do the new power trail placed by Team5150 and Trail Cachers plus grabbing a couple more grids. It is going to be a very short summer since we have so many things we want to do and only a limited number of weekends in which to do it. We will do what we can and regret what we miss out on, I"m sure!

If it doesn't move and it should, use the the WD40

There is or was a cache on top of Harney Peak (The highest point in the state and any point in the US to the east of it) that is part of a steeper, but doable hike that can be done from a few different starting places in Custer State Park or from longer trailheads. There are a series of caches along the old Flume Trail from Sheridan Lake to Rockerville. Then on a shorter access note, now there are about a dozen caches up in Rapid City on M-Hill that offers some hiking from the city access. Almost every hill with a forest road has a cache on top of it.

We have done some of the flume trail caches... We were going to get a bunch up in that area one afternoon, but a wicked lightning storm moved in on us very quickly, so we decided that on top of the hill wasn't the best place to be!
Another one of our favorites in the BH was one called Centennial Trail: Milestones. It was a straight up the hill, lots of deadfall and pine needles to up the difficulty level. When you get near the top you have to climb up and through a bunch of rocks. It is GRUELING, but the view from the top was worth every step! Matthew says that is his favorite cache ever!

Lee, You should definitely do a caching trip through the Hills. There are a TON of bike friendly caches over there that I know that you and Peggy would enjoy! One ride would be the Iron Mountain Road... it has fantastic cache sites and a beautiful, beautiful ride to boot. I would cache in the Black Hills all the time if I could, it is such a wonderful place!
